The Stanford Prison Experiment

This psychological experiment was funded by the US Office of Naval Research to study the psychological effects of becoming a prisoner or prison guard. 24 male students were randomly assigned to the roles of either prisoner or guard. As the experiment went on, the guards adapted to their roles just as you would expect by being abusive, authoritarian, and subjecting some prisoners to psychological torture.

The Milgram experiment on obedience to authority figures was a series of notable social psychology experiments conducted by Yale University psychologist Stanley Milgram, which measured the willingness of study participants to obey an authority figure who instructed them to perform acts that conflicted with their personal conscience.
